Comparative analysis of psychological symptom levels and childhood traumas of adults with and without separation anxiety

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to comperatively examine the psychological symptom levels of adults and childhood traumas of individuals who has or has not seperation aonxiety.METHODS: The sample was selected according to the simple-random sample selection. The sample of the research consists of 216 people between the ages of 18-65 residing in Istanbul, Turkiye. Ethics committee approval of this study was obtained from Istanbul Aydin University. After the approval of the ethics committee, the consent form, a personal information form created by the researcher, Adult Separation Anxiety Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Childhood Trauma Scale were administered to the participants.RESULTS: In the study, when the groups with and without adult separation anxiety were compared, the results indicated that the group with adult anxiety had higher scores on the brief symptom inventory, anxiety, depression, negative self, somatization and hostility subscales. According to the childhood abuse scale, when the groups with and without adult separation anxiety are compared, the results indicated that the group with adult anxiety has higher scores on emotional abuse, physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect and sexual abuse subscales.CONCLUSIONS: Data were collected from two different groups. The results of the study revelaed that the group with adult anxiety had higher brief symptom inventory, anxiety, depression, negative self, somatization, hostility, emotional abuse, physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect and sexual abuse subscales compared to the group without adult separation anxiety.
